Katrina’s House of Care is founded upon a commitment to nurture and empower. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to rebuilding the lives of individuals that have been adversely affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our Mission is to provide financial assistance, shelter, and holistic support services that lead to self sufficiency for residents who are willing to learn how to maximize their natural abilities, limited resources, talents, and skills to successfully rebuild their lives. Our target population include: youth, elderly, disabled adults and low to moderate income families and individuals.
Advocacy programs
Advocacy and networking for a stronger levee protection system, environmental justice, elderly services and housing for displaced residents.
Youth programs
1. After-school and Summer programs in Leadership Development, Character Education, Recreation and Academic Enrichment
2. Youth Entrepreneurship programs where youth will learn how to write a business plan, start a business and share in the revenue generated from the business
Senior Citizen programs
1. Bienville Street Elderly Co-op Housing
Katrina’s House of Care is developing a series of homes to provide long term housing and holistic support necessary to help the most vulnerable populations of New Orleans, including the elderly and disabled, return to the city. The first house is in the Tulane/Gravier neighborhood. The University Minnesota School of Architecture assisted the organization with the design of the house. This 24 hour facility is the future home of three residents and one caretaker.
2. Assistance for the elderly and disabled
Katrina’s House of Care gives the elderly and disabled assistance with case management, socialization activities, relocating, home repairs, purchasing furniture, building materials and advocacy. As part of these activities, we sponsor a Senior Reunion Day, where we give our valuable seniors a Hot Meal, Recreation, Shopping, Wellness, Spirituality, Fieldtrips, Information & Referral Sessions.
3. Elder Evacuation Retreat Center – a multipurpose facility
Katrina’s House of Care is committed to opening a hurricane evacuation retreat center for the elderly. The Elder Evacuation Retreat Center will provide our seniors with a safe, tranquil place to go during hurricane evacuation periods. It will have amenities such as a wellness pavilion, a conference center, case management services, up to date information on what’s happening at home, and a wonderful support team to care for their needs during their stay.
Any gift will help in our mission to ensure that the deaths of seniors like 97 year old Bertha Nicholson will not be repeated due to a lack of preparedness. Ms. Nicholson was left behind during the storm because she had no family or place to which she could evacuate. A friend of hers, another senior citizen, drove over and picked her up to shelter her at her own house. Unfortunately, the house flooded, and both women had to be rescued from the attic. The hours that Ms. Nicholson spent in the floodwater caused a serious infection which led to her eventual death in one of the city’s nursing homes shortly after the storm. Our center will be a lasting monument to the memory of Ms. Nicholson and all the seniors who needlessly lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Katrina. It is in their memory that we bring this request and opportunity to you.
Education and empowerment programs
1. Project Fisherman in Action
This project provides Hurricane survivors with case management services, technical assistance, financial support, and the nurturing necessary to help rebuild their lives. Families or individuals enrolled in the program are required to participate in specific training workshops and seminars where their progress will be monitored as they learn financial self-reliance. Funding is used to provide financial assistance to participants of the program that will alleviate immediate suffering and assist them with the necessary seed funding to help implement case plans that lead to self-sufficiency.
We have found the land for the Elder Evacuation Retreat Center and are now in the process of raising $700,000 to seed our goal. We need partners who will contribute $50 or more to help Katrina's House of Care reach that goal. Your generous and appreciated tax deductible contribution will help seniors who have returned home to New Orleans but need a place to go during voluntary and mandatory evacuations. Your gift will also be an investment in the lives of inner-city youth who will be able to utilize the facility to escape the harsh realities of city life while participating in educational workshops that reinforce learning and leadership institutes that help develop successful future leaders. Youth will have a place to come and learn how to nurture and care for the environment. They will also have a place to further their knowledge in the areas of science, math and technology through interactive programs. Trained staff will help them develop character, confidence and values that lead to healthy lifestyles choices, successful career paths and positive academic results in school.
