Charity Focus:
Education, Economic Development, and Nutritional Help

Founded in 2001 for the purpose of improving the quality of life in
the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, post-Katrina, the
Renaissance Project has expanded to include the Upper Ninth Ward
and portions of the Eighth Ward. Our programmatic areas include
economic development, food access, public education, and arts and
cultural programming.
Economic Development Programs
St. Claude Avenue Main Street
The Renaissance Project was recently awarded a five-year economic revitalization grant by the National Trust for Historic Preservation Louisiana Urban Main Street program for the nine-block stretch of St. Claude Ave. between Elysian Fields Ave. and Press St.
St. Claude Avenue Merchants Association
Post Katrina, the Renaissance Project is working to rebuild the
association in conjunction with the St. Claude Avenue Main Street
program.
Food Access Programs
Downtown Neighborhood Market Consortium
The Renaissance Project recognizes food access as an integral part of building healthy communities. Recently, we opened the
Lower 9th Ward Farmers Market at St. David’s Church
(Sun. afternoons) and the Upper 9th Ward Farmers Market at
Holy Angels Convent (Sat. afternoons).
Urban Growers Association
Developing locally grown produce for farmers markets starting with the Dunson Memorial Garden in the Lower 9th ward.
Edcuation Programs
Students at the Center (SAC)
Providing fiscal sponsorship and assistance to the creative writing and digital media program operating in Eleanor McMain and Frederick Douglass High Schools.
Frederick Douglass Community Coalition
Bringing resources to Frederick Douglass Senior High School to
establish a culinary arts program, restore the 1600-seat auditorium, and open a media center.
Arts and Cultural Programs
New Orleans Arts Exchange (NOAX)
Developing a community-based arts and cultural center for youth.
